Sunita Varghees Bridal

Sunita and Kelly were married this last Friday, October 7th – so time to release Sunita’s bridal shoot images.  Also, stay tuned for Sunita and Kelly’s wedding images in about 2 weeks and you can click here for Sunita and Kelly’s Engagement Images.    This shoot took place on August 31st at Laguna Gloria.   Each time I shoot there, I love it even more than the last time.

For a variety of reasons, this shoot was mid afternoon rather than shooting late in the day which is generally the best light for photography.  We started inside to stay cool.  The rooms for shooting in the Mansion at Laguna Gloria generally face away from the sun or have windows with awnings which means we get beautiful, soft window light without having the light directly streaming into the room.  We started on the ground floor, worked our way upstairs and finished in the art room with its green pastel colors and windows on 3 of the 4 walls.  We shoot for classic full length and portrait shots, but as you can see, we also go for fun shots and fashion shots as well.

Once we finished inside, we headed outside and again, Laguna Gloria has several great locations for shooting even in the mid afternoon sun.  In general we look to keep direct sunlight off of Sunita’s face while properly lighting her relative to the bright background.  In the shots with the sun visible, that means two flashes at full power.  With other shots it is just one flash at partial power.  We also sometime exposed for Sunita’s face, but let the background go bright.  All of these approaches are different “artistic” effects we can control with the camera and lighting.

You can also see below some of our creative / fine art processing effects.  Sunita selected the square / angle cropped, black and white image of her leaning over the couch for her bridal portrait.  We printed it at 20 x 20 and framed it with a black and white matt and black frame – very beautiful.

Ashlee & Travis Wedding

Even though both the Shulers and the Taylors were from Bastrop and were affected by the Central Texas fires, this long awaited wedding happened at Villa St. Clair on September 10th.   And it was a beautiful wedding.  Most of the families I have had the pleasure to work with have been wonderful, and these families were no exception.  You could tell this young couple was off to a great start with all the love and support of their respective families.

When I first met this couple a year ago, I knew they were special.  I was excited when they selected me to be the photographer for their wedding and Ashlee’s bridal session.  I did have to finally confess to Ashlee who was a track scholar at Angelo State University that my daughter (also named ASHLEE!) was a 4 year volleyball scholar at rival Abilene Christian University.  Fortunately, neither Ashlee held it against me!

This was my first time to shoot at Villa St Clair and it is a beautiful facility with excellent staff.  Things did run a shade late on the ceremony, so we completed the group shots and started the reception.  Later we snuck Ashlee and Travis out for bride and groom shots.  It was totally dark by then, but using the front porch area and my trusty video light for shooting out back, we captured beautiful images.  You will also see some of the very wide panorama shots below.  These are captured as a series of shots and stiched together in Photoshop.  I use this technique a lot and I prefer it to a “fisheye lens” which results in a lot of distortion.

Ashley & Kevin Wedding

The time for Ashley and Kevin’s wedding had come (see Ashley & Kevin Engagement for our engagement shoot) and I knew it was going to be special from the beginning.  First and foremost, my good friend (and first bride!) Kandi Cook was coordinating this wedding.  Kandi (KR Creations and Events) is just fantastic to work with.  You know right away the wedding is going to be beautiful and on schedule.  In fact, Kandi is doing the day of coordination for my daughters wedding in December.  And did I tell you Kandi also does incredible custom invitations?

One of the things that makes Kandi so great to work with is her careful selection of vendors to recommend to her clients.  And there is none better than Yara Castelan of Unique Design and Events.   Yara’s linens and setups are amazing.  Add to his that the wedding and reception was at Crowne Plaza which is a beautiful venue with excellent service.  Kandi works closely with Melissa Hunziker of the Crowne Plaza who is like Kandi – professional and fun to work with.  As a professional photographer, I work closely with the venue, coordinator, videographer, DJ and all the others to make sure the wedding goes smoothly.  These relationships, whether they are existing ones like these, or new ones, are so important to provide my clients with an overall “perfect” experience.

The other thing that was so special about this wedding were the families involved.  I had the pleasure of meeting Ashley’s mother about a year ago.  She was a wonderful woman who I am sad to say passed away before the wedding.  She wanted this day to be very special for Ashley and her family.  In working with Ashley and Kandi I had a sense this family, as well as Kevins, was pretty incredible – and they were.  It was an emotional and beautiful day and I was very honored to be a part of it.
